HEAD AND NECK CANCER AWARENESS
Cancer is the second most common cause of death in India (after cardiovascular disease). Friday, July 27, 2018 is World 3rd Head & Neck Cancer Day. Head and neck cancer is a group of cancers that starts in the mouth, nose, throat, larynx, sinuses or salivary glands.
RISK FACTORS
Some individuals are more likely to get head and neck cancer because of their lifestyle.
● Alcohol and tobacco: Smoking and drinking can increase the risk of head and neck cancer.
● Infections: If people are infected with the virus HPV (Human Papilloma virus) or HIV, they are at an increased risk of getting the cancer.
● Age: More common in people above the age of 50.
● Chewing Betel quid (paan) is also considered to increase the cancer risk.
PREVENTION
One can lower the risk of head and neck cancer by:
● Avoiding betel quid (paan).
● Quitting tobacco products including smokeless tobacco.
● Reducing alcohol intake.
● Increasing fruits and vegetables in diet.
TREATMENT
Microvascular Reconstruction of the part which is removed due to cancer is the best technique for providing better qualityof life for patients suffering from Head and neck cancer.
